Why Tiny House Open Houses Will Make You Question Everything
Last Friday evening, my sister invited me along with two of her other friends to celebrate Earth Day at Fair Park in Dallas. She was eager to check out one exhibit in particular. Tiny Houses. While I have only seen one or two episodes of Tiny House Nation, I was curious to see how "tiny" these spaces were in real life.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the owners of the tiny homes, were on site, and actually giving tours of their tiny abodes. What I came to learn about this community of people has both inspired and challenged me. I don't know about you, but the idea of getting back to basics, decluttering, and focusing on what matters most all while becoming a better steward of the select items you do have presented itself first as admiration, and then some serious reflection. It has gone a little something like this...
Do you really need over 25 "cups" when you live alone, in a one bedroom apartment?
What is all this crap in weird drawers and shelves? Have you even looked at this or used this in the last 6 months?
Why in the world do you have over 50 magazines sitting on your bookshelf? You own a technology company, a dropbox, and are fully aware that all of the information contained in said magazines is most likely on pinterest or the publishers archives on the world wide web.
When was the last time you took a hard look at the things you have and said "do I really need this?" "does this item serve a purpose?", and finally, "does this item bring me JOY?" (these questions were the exact questions my tiny house friends told me they asked themselves when purging to move into their tiny houses)
If I am being honest, I'm still processing, and feeling the pressure to do some serious purging. What about you? How do you stay organized?
